Revising Your Life

The next workshop begins on Thursday, January 7th, at 5 pm, Pacific time.

Do you see yourself as the hero of your own life? Or, at least the main character? Once you do, you can live with more clarity and calm.

Understanding the literary archetype of the hero’s journey can help you find a new narrative for your life.

Over the course of four weeks together, we will:

  • discuss the hero’s journey, a mythic storytelling structure used for millennia to understand the human story
  • watch bits of films, study stories, read poems, and revel in the connections
  • use this structure to take notes and write about our own lives
  • share stories with each other in community to understand this more fully
  • start to revise the way we see our lives — instead of one thing after another happening to us, we can see ourselves as the hero of our own lives

First Zoom Class

This class will focus on the Departure section of the hero’s journey.

We will talk about representations of this Call to Action in films, books, poems, and music, as well as our lives.

During the week, you will receive readings, writing prompts, and clips of movies to help you think about this section of the journey.

Second Zoom Session

This class will focus on the Initiation section of the hero’s journey.

We will talk about representations of this Initiation in films, books, poems, and music, as well as our lives.

During the week, you will receive readings, writing prompts, and clips of movies to help you think about this section of the journey.

Third Zoom Session

This class will focus on the Return to the Known World section of the hero’s journey.

We will talk about representations of this journey home in films, books, poems, and music, as well as our lives.

During the week, you will receive readings, writing prompts, and clips of movies to help you think about this section of the journey.

Fourth Zoom Session

This class we will integrate all the sections together to discuss the journey as a whole.

We will talk about representations of the structure in films, books, poems, and music, as well as our lives.

Finally, based on the work we have done together, we will discuss how you see this playing out in your lives and how we can start to see ourselves as the protagonists of our own lives.

After our last group session, I offer one editing session/Zoom conversation/email exchange to talk about your final realizations.

This journey requires resisting perfectionism.

This journey requires not knowing.

This journey requires discomfort.

This journey requires not having control.

This is how we find our power, our resilience, and our community.
